Improving Your Dental Care

Oral Care For Your Toddler

If you have a toddler, then you may find that oral care is a struggle with your little one. Some children simply do not like to brush their teeth. However, oral care is extremely important and it is best to get your child on board with a good oral care routine at an early age. This may mean that you simply need to purchase the types of products that work best with your little one. Keep reading to learn about some good suggestions.

Appropriate Sized Toothbrush

Your child may like to act like a big kid, but that does not mean that they should be using oral care products that are meant for older kids. Specifically, they will need a toothbrush that fits their mouth. Some good things to look for in a toddler toothbrush include a small head that is angled for easy cleaning of the back teeth. A large-handled brush is best to help your child with dexterity and grip. And, the brush should have either soft or medium-hard bristles. This can prevent the brush from cutting the gums as your child figures out how much pressure to use when brushing their teeth.

If your child wants to try an electric toothbrush, then you should know that this is an excellent choice. The vibration helps to get a lot of the bits of food that your child may miss with a regular toothbrush and it also prevents your son or daughter from placing too much pressure on the teeth. Also, many electric toothbrushes for children have timed functions that keep the brush on for the entire two-minute timeframe that your child should be brushing for.

Fun Toothpaste

Some kids simply do not like the strong mint taste of "adult" kinds of toothpaste. Thankfully, there are tons of options when it comes to toothpaste and many children love choosing their own flavor. So, look around at the different options that are available to you. You can find pastes with a cherry, watermelon, birthday cake, citrus, or strawberry flavor. And some companies even make wacky pastes with bacon and other fun flavorings. Some of these pastes also come in bright and fluorescent colors.

Make sure that the paste you find contains fluoride if your child is over three years old. And, you can make a game out of letting your child pick out their toothpaste.
