Tips for Wearing Braces When You Work in a Professional Setting

When you work in a professional setting where you're expected to maintain a polished look, the idea of wearing braces to work can be a bit intimidating. It would not be legal for a dress code to bar you from wearing braces as they are a medical device, but it is still something that many adults don't feel comfortable doing. That does not mean, however, that you should avoid getting braces if you need or want them. There are ways to make wearing braces a more comfortable, confidence-enhancing experience in the workplace.

1. Talk to your dentist about less-visible options.

If you have only ever seen obvious, metal braces with big brackets, then you might be a little worried when your dentist tells you that you do need actual braces and not invisible aligners. And if you can get invisible aligners, just go with those; they will solve your workplace woes. There are less-visible braces than the large metal ones you're picturing. Lingual braces, which are placed on the tongue side of the teeth, are sometimes an option. You can see the wires on the front of the teeth, but these aren't that obvious. Your dentist could also fit you with white ceramic braces, which are less visible than metal ones.

2. Keep a dental care kit handy.

Being seen with braces is one thing. Being seen with food in your braces, or finding out that your breath is bad when you're speaking to an important client, is far worse. Keep a cleaning kit handy so you can clean your teeth mid-day at the office. Floss, toothpaste, a toothbrush, mouthwash, and inter-dental cleaners are all items to keep in this bag.

3. Ask your dentist about wearing rubber bands only at night.

Often, patients with braces are asked to wear rubber bands connecting certain brackets. These bands make your braces more obvious, and they can make it harder to speak clearly. Talk to your dentist to learn if it would be a big deal if you only wear rubber bands on your braces after work and though the night. This may slow your progress a little, but it will enable you to speak more clearly during meetings and with coworkers.

Wearing braces in a professional setting is completely okay, but if it makes you feel self-conscious, the tips above should help keep you more comfortable and confident. Contact clinics like Poulson Orthodontics to learn more.
